ASDA IN SHIRLEY
ASDA has recently been voted Britain’s Favourite Supermarket and has been the UK’s lowest priced supermarket for the last 13 years, according to the Grocer Magazine.
The inclusion of a major foodstore within Parkgate has been a key requirement for the regeneration of Shirley Town Centre and we’re excited to be bringing our famous low prices to the local community.
We also hope that our presence will attract other retailers and give Shirley town centre the ‘boost’ it needs to increased footfall and make it an even greater place to be.
JOBS AT ASDA
We always aim to recruit colleagues locally thereby bringing wages and their associated economic benefits to the communities around our stores. We recruit on aptitude and personality, before training candidates to develop their skills through a range of development programmes.
The new store is expected to create up to 400 permanent jobs. In order to give local people the best opportunity to join our team, we will enter into a Local Employment Partnership with Job Centre Plus. Local Employment Partnerships seek to provide long term unemployed people and those most disadvantaged in the labour market a route back into work.
ASDA IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
ASDA stores are very much at the heart of the communities they serve and our colleagues play an active role in supporting both local and national causes. We encourage all colleagues to support their local communities through volunteering, fundraising and taking part in local events.
Each ASDA store has a designated Community Colleague who is responsible for engaging with the community, local schools and charities and spends at least 20 hours a week volunteering outside the store. Charities and community organisations are also supported through a range of events in store from fun days to raffles and till collection days.
Helping customers keep their families healthy is important to us and many of our national initiatives support this aim. In 2008 we launched ASDA Sporting Chance to give children access to free sports sessions during the holidays. We are working with over 3,000 partners who provide activities including football, swimming and gymnastics. We also sponsor the nationwide Kwik Cricket competition, the largest primary school outdoor sporting event in the UK.
We’re also the only supermarket to use a national network of local sourcing hubs to connect small and fine food producers to its regional distribution centres, giving them access to a greater number of stores.
